The sketch was created in a hospital, waiting for a patient to “wake up”, which makes the title self-explanatory. In working out the image the main feature to me is the “sculptural” quality, the plasticity of these figures that appear nearly three-dimensional. But I purposely fell short of any real try to make this look really 3D, as would have been possible with the proper software, thereby never crossing the border to tricking the eye as far as possible. In order to grasp the specific aesthetic of this piece I think, this needs to be understood.
