This image really deserves its title, because the way it came
about always felt just crazy to me and, as it was the case with the
image “Japanese Winter”, this feeling was triggered by the need to
create according to a “theme” , because a competition in Japan made
this a condition, but complying always gives me the creeps. So I
looked at the white frame on my monitor and I was just angry at
myself for even trying to comply. So I rather instantly decided to
quit and in a spontaneous move I sort of crossed out the image frame
with a vertical and a horizontal line, like cutting it into four
pieces. Indeed the reason for starting the image was forgotten, but
the “cut” lines were fascinating. In order to moderate their
rigidness I added a waved line to both, again just meant as the edge
of a color plane, but without the aim of perfection in making the
original line disappear. I then looked at the work for quite some time
and then, in an instant I added another “cut” to one of the four
fields, stalling again. This process repeated itself until during the
course of a day all basic lines were created. And this completely
untypical staccato also repeated itself every time within the next
weeks whenever I decided to go on with this image, staring at it
maybe for an hour, then finishing a part with extreme speed and
saving it. When I had finished this image, I just thought, “that was
crazy” and it took rather long, before I not only knew it was good,
but felt that way about it.
